It’s still in the 90s in Houston, but back-to-school pictures on Facebook have me dreaming of fall. I don’t know why I associate this time of year with fall weather. I’ve lived in Houston my whole life (except during college in San Antonio) and it’s always hot when school starts! Instead of pulling out my sweaters and boots, I’m looking at Instagram, blogs, and fashion magazines to see what’s hot for fall (get it?? I crack myself up!) I blogged about Pantone’s Fall 2017 Colors a couple of weeks ago, so I thought I’d write a few posts about my favorite style trends, starting with velvet.
Velvet is associated with opulence, romance, and nobility. When it was first introduced to Europe in the 14th century, it’s softness and rich hues made it a favorite fabric for church, royal, and state robes. It was also popular with medieval artists who produced beautiful textiles in brocaded silk. Because it was expensive to make, velvet was out of reach for the lower and middle classes until the Industrial Revolution, when production was mechanized and the material became easier and cheaper to make.
Fortunately, there are lots of options for adding velvet to your wardrobe at different price points. These are some of my favorites.
