Fall Fashion: Plaid

Plaid, a cloth pattern with stripes of different widths that cross each other to form squares, is a perennial fall favorite. Known in Scotland as tartan, it was originally made from wool, hand woven by weavers who used natural dyes available in their regions. In the mid-1800s, people started weaving specific patterns for clans, families, and institutions that wanted to be known by their Scottish heritage. Today, plaid is as ubiquitous in fall as are Pumpkin Spice Lattes!

When I think of plaid, I think of a classic tartan kilt, but there are other styles of plaid, including argyle, gingham, windowpane, buffalo checked, madras, and houndstooth. The infinite combinations of size, scale, and color make plaid an exciting pattern that is used widely in fashion, interior design, and home decor.

One of the items in the Kelly Gartner Style Fall 2016 Challenge capsule wardrobe is a plaid shirt. I found some great options for the challenge, but there are so many pretty plaids that I just couldn’t stop pinning them, so I chose 16 more for you! (Shopping links below gallery.)
