Handbags 101: What’s in My Bag?

Four years ago, I fell in love with Stella & Dot jewelry at my friend, Christine’s, trunk show. I had seen Stella & Dot online and in magazines, but Christine’s show was the first time I saw the collection in person. I loved the product, the packaging, the catalogue, and the website. Everything was stylish and sophisticated – I was smitten. When Stella & Dot launched a handbag line two years later, I was in heaven!

Stella & Dot’s bag collection has grown a lot since we released our first line. We have clutches, cross body bags, tote bags, and overnight bags. We also have wallets, wristlets, and poufs. It’s been fun to have a variety of styles, patterns, and colors to choose from when I get dressed every day. I’m the stylist who can’t resist buying all the new bags when they come out and can’t bear to part with my old ones!

I recently read Rue La La’s guide to handbags, Handbags 101. With information about iconic designs, luxury materials, signature hardware, and tips on how to care for your bags, it’s a great starting point if you’re thinking about adding a new bag to your accessories wardrobe. Classic shapes like the clutch, the tote, the pochette (like FENDI’s Baguette that Carrie Bradshaw carried in Sex and the City,) the hobo, and the satchel, never go out of style, so you can’t go wrong with one of them!

While I like hobos and satchels and have several in my closet, my favorite bag shape is the tote. I need a bag that’s sturdy, durable, and roomy, and my Madison Tech Bag fits the bill.

The Madison Tech Bag has a couple of features that make it a great every day bag. It’s very sturdy, with a textured saffiano exterior and a spill-resistant interior. It has a removable strap, and you can zip it up for a smaller, classic shape or unzip it for more room. I can put everything I need in this bag, and it’s the perfect carry-on when traveling. One thing I really like about it is that it has a zip closure at the top. And I love the color – it’s bright and happy, and you can wear it year round.

So what’s in my Madison Tech Bag? Everything I need to get through my day. Take a look!

I usually unzip the sides of my Madison Tech Bag so I can fit everything into it without it being too crowded.

My essentials: wallet, pouch, planner, notebook,  glasses case, pouf, and, of course, business cards. Can’t leave home without those!

I recently got my first pair of prescription glasses. I wear them all the time now, not just for reading, which I like because, seeing! – but it drives me crazy to have smudges on the lenses. I carry the case with a cloth and lens cleaner all the time now. I ♥ my Erin Condren Life Planner – the format, the colors, the quotes, the stickers, the customization options. It’s an extension of my right arm, and I can’t live without it! I keep all of my Stella & Dot information in my monogrammed May Design notebook. My friend, Rachela, of Butter & Honey Graphic Design, designed my business cards. She’s a fellow Stella & Dot stylist and customizes our business cards to coordinate with the latest collection. I’ve carried the Stella & Dot snakeskin wallet for two years, and it’s still in excellent condition. The adorable elephant pouf and our brand-new elephant pouch keep all the little things corralled so they don’t get lost inside a big bag.

Hello, gorgeous! Don’t you love the polka dot interior?

Contents of PouchI use our new elephant pouch like a pencil-case. I have a black pen and a highlighter, some colored pens from Erin Condren, correction tape, a tape measure, an extra pair of glasses, and a finger duster to wipe my phone, laptop, and iPad screens. Again, with the smudges. I got it at The Container Store. I also keep a phone and iPad charger in the pouch. When I’m carrying my laptop, I put the laptop charger and the phone/iPad charger in a separate pouf.

If you like a more conservative bag, our Madison Tech Bag also comes in black and black/creme breton stripe. We have a variety of wallets, and our poufs and small accessories come in lots of different colors and patterns, too.

So, what’s your favorite bag shape? Do you like luxury, high-end brands or mid-range brands like Stella & Dot? Do you switch out your bag often or stick with one or two everyday bags? What’s in your bag?

  1. This totally makes me want to reorganize my Stella and Dot Ikat bag! I have SO enjoyed carrying all summer and suppose I need to think about a fall bag now!
