Houston is slowly turning to fall with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s. The sky is bright blue, and I even saw a few colorful leaves floating to the ground yesterday! Although many people are still wearing shorts and flip flops, it’s cool enough to wear leggings and boots, especially at night. I’ve been wearing my favorite Lysse leggings and some of my new boutique tunics, but I can’t pull on the boots quite yet. I get my hopes up for a crisp, cool, glorious fall day only to be disappointed when my feet are sweating later! It reminds me of one of my favorite someecards:
While leggings, tights, tanks, and tunics are essential pieces in your fall wardrobe, nothing adds more value to your closet than a button-down shirt. You can wear a button down shirt with dresses, skirts, shorts, pants, and leggings. You can dress it up or down – I love the trend of pairing a sparkly statement necklace with a chambray or plaid shirt – and a button-down shirt is appropriate for work, casual, and even date night outfits. Button-downs never go out of style, so you can get a lot of wear from one quality purchase.

A chambray shirt is a workhorse. I think it’s more versatile than white because it adds more color and dimension to an outfit. A chambray shirt with black leggings and brown boots looks perfectly polished by itself.
I love the silver, beaded necklace with the chambray shirt. It adds personality to a simple outfit. A scarf is also a stylish accessory and so on-trend.
(BTW, the blogger in the first picture is in her forties, and the blogger in the second picture is in her twenties, and this outfit looks great on both of them!)
A chambray shirt is a must-have, in my opinion, but a white or solid color shirt is a good staple, too.
Like a chambray shirt, a white shirt and blue jeans looks good without any accessories – it’s just a classic, no-fuss way to dress – but it’s easy to take it up a notch.
A pair of red pants, a yellow cardigan, a leopard scarf, green cargo pants – adding these elements to a white button-down shirt is an easy way to infuse your personality into your outfits.
If you have chambray and white shirts, and you’re looking for another button-down to add to your wardrobe, try a plaid or checked shirt. They are everywhere on Pinterest and fashion blogs and in magazines.
I love the way the colors in this outfit complement each other – green and blue plaid is classic, and the tan cardigan sets if off nicely The cognac bag ties it all together.
You can wear a plaid shirt like you would a chambray or white button-down – tucked into pants or a skirt, layered with a cardigan or pullover, as a jacket over a t-shirt, or by itself (just make sure it’s long enough to cover your backside if you’re wearing it with leggings!)
Do you have a button-down shirt in your closet? Do you tend to wear it with the same skirt or pants, or do you mix it with lots of other items? I’ll share some shopping options for chambray, white, and plaid shirts later this week. If you’d like to see more ideas for how to wear a button-down shirt, follow my Pinterest board!
