What to Wear with Leggings

Sources: one, two unknown, three

One of my fall wardrobe essentials is a good pair of leggings. (Read about my three favorite brands here.) Leggings are comfortable and and look cute on women of all ages…if you know how to wear them.

Ladies, leggings are not pants. They may look like pants and feel like pants and act like pants, but they are not pants. They are underwear, not outerwear, so you should wear something that is long enough to cover your booty. Leggings should be thick enough that nothing shows through them, fitted enough that they smooth out your tummy and hips, and stretchy enough to be comfortable. Pair your leggings with a tunic, long shirt, or long sweater and pull on some booties or riding boots for the perfect fall outfit.

1. Long tee and sweater

Lots of brands are making extra long t-shirts to wear with skinny jeans and leggings – they’re not quite as thick as a tunic, so you might need to wear a long sweater with them.

2. Dress or tunic

A tunic-length top or dress should hit anywhere from mid-thigh to the top of the knee; you want your leggings to show between the hem and your boots. You can find inexpensive tunics at Loft and Target and in brands like Pleione and Caslon at Nordstrom. Land’s End and J. Jill have nice, tailored options. If you’re looking for boho chic, visit Anthropologie or Johnny Was. I like to shop local and online boutiques for brands you don’t see at the big retailers.

There are so many options for tunics, I had a hard time choosing which ones to recommend, but these are some of my favorites. Many of these styles come in plus sizes, and the prices range from $35 to $235.

Some of my favorite boutiques in Houston are Marlo Miller Boutique, Monkee’s of Houston, and The Impeccable Pig. Online favorites are Piper Street Shop, The Mint Julep Boutique, and The Pink Lily Boutique. These stores have unique brands in a limited number of sizes, and they sell out quickly, so if you see something you like, grab it!

If you don’t have a tunic and you don’t want to buy one, take a look at some of the knee-length dresses hanging in your closet. You can probably wear one of them with leggings and boots or booties and get the tunic-and-legging look for practically nothing (remember – you should invest in a good pair of leggings if you don’t already have one!)

3. Long button-down shirt

One of the easiest ways to style leggings is with a long, button-down shirt. You probably already have one in your closet. Chambray and plaid shirts are popular for fall. You can tuck them into skirts or pants or wear them out with leggings (ask long as they over your booty!) If they aren’t quite long enough, you should wear an extra long tank under them.

If you need a long tank to wear under your tunic or top, I recommend the ones below. The tanks from Tees by Tina (the third picture) come in 79 colors!

P. S. While I was researching tunics and tops, I found Glamour Farms, an online boutique that has a lot of options if you’re curvy. Their prices are reasonable, too. 🙂
