Build a Jewelry Wardrobe: Make a Statement with a Necklace or Earrings

This is the fourth post in a series about how to build a jewelry wardrobe with pieces from Stella & Dot.

When you’re standing in front of your closet in the morning, trying to decide what to wear, do you throw on your go-to work outfit, then accessorize with a tried-and-true necklace or your favorite pair of earrings? That’s what I did before I became a stylist with Stella & Dot. I’ve always loved jewelry and often bought unique, artisan-made pieces on my travels. I liked having jewelry that no one else had (unless they shopped at this little boutique in Paris):

I bought two scarves and three pairs of earrings here!

Like many stylists, I started selling Stella & Dot jewelry because I loved EVERYTHING and certainly couldn’t afford to buy all the pieces I wanted. I soon realized that not only did I love the jewelry, I also loved the job! I enjoyed helping women  find jewelry that expressed their personal style, and when I learned how to put an outfit together, complete with a statement necklace or earrings, bracelets, and rings, I couldn’t stop! Now I feel naked without my Stella & Dot. 🙂

A statement necklace, earrings, or bracelet is a great investment. It becomes a signature piece and always garners compliments. In my opinion, a statement piece is a must-have in your jewelry wardrobe (along with everyday essentials and layering pieces.) The good news is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to make a statement. I’m going to show you how to wardrobe four of this season’s hottest statement pieces in several ways, giving you the most bang for your buck.(Today’s post is about statement necklaces and earrings; tomorrow I will write about bracelets and rings.)

Statement Necklace

Palomino Necklace

The Palomino Necklace combines several of the key trends for spring/summer 2012: coral/pastels, color-blocking, and ombre (graduated tones of color). When I wear a statement necklace, I usually pair it with simple studs, some bangles, and/or a subtle ring so the focus is on the gorgeous color near your face (always a good thing!) One of the things I love about Stella & Dot is that most of our pieces can be dressed up or dressed down, which is why investing in a statement piece makes sense. Here are two outfits that feature the Palomino:

Navy dress with Palomino Necklace
Navy and coral make a great combination.
Mint green pants with Palomino Necklace
Mint green with coral looks so fresh.

These are just two of the ways you can wear this gorgeous necklace. I think the navy blue dress with the spectator pumps is perfect for a summer wedding, and the Palomino sparkles up what would be an ordinary shopping-on-a-Saturday outfit. It would also look great with a maxi dress and some flat sandals, a pretty top and a pencil skirt, and even shorts and a t-shirt while you’re on vacation. Build your vacation wardrobe around this versatile necklace and not only will you save room in your suitcase, but you will also be the envy of your fellow travelers!

These are a few of my other favorite statement necklaces from the spring/summer collection:

Alexandria Necklace
Calliah Necklace
Stevie Necklace

{The Palomino Necklace is named after three stylists’ grandmother. Read the story on the S & D blog.}

Statement Earrings

Capri Chandelier Earrings

Nothing says summer like turquoise, and Stella & Dot has the perfect earrings for fun in the sun. These earrings are adorned with beautiful turquoise beads and are surprisingly light and easy to wear. (We also have them in coral.) With earrings like this, it’s best to wear a simple necklace, although the earrings can stand on their own. Statement earrings also look great with a an armful of coordinating bangles and a cocktail ring. The Capri Chandelier Earrings are the perfect complement to these next two outfits:

Turquoise and green with a touch of orange.
Turquoise jazzes up the classic white-and-khaki combo.

The Capri Chandelier Earrings look beautiful with the ruffled green dress and would be perfect for Sunday brunch. I really like the way the earrings turn a casual shorts and t-shirt look into an eye-catching statement. I would wear this outfit to a backyard barbecue (if I had the legs, that is!) You can wear these earrings all summer long with just about anything in your closet. Turquoise is universally flattering and looks great with any complexion and hair/eye color.

Here are a few more statement earrings from Stella & Dot:

Serenity Stone Drops
Talia Teardrop Earrings
Tigris Earrings

Which look is your favorite? Do you have a great statement necklace or pair of earrings that make you feel special when you wear them? Tell me about it in the comments!

Come back tomorrow for part two of this post, and learn how to make a statement with bracelets or rings.
